The little Belgian town of Héron, situated between Liège and Namur, was seeking to inject new life into a vast abandoned space close to a sports centre.

The layout was designed to include the classic play area apparatus: multiplay structures, springers, play panels, slides, swings, zip lines

The space is divided into four separate areas, each focusing on different activities and age groups. A long path of around 300 metres has been incorporated to allow families to move around over the entire site and provide access to each zone for children with disabilities. All around, benches and tables are provided as places to rest and observe and supervise the children.

Zone No. 1: play area essentials (from 1 year of age)

Designed for younger children, this area features classic play equipment enjoyed by all children and that encourages sharing and group play.

  • The zone includes three springers: a 10-seat structure (the Van) with a wide platform close to the ground to allow easy transfer of a child from a wheelchair, the Rabbit and the Twiny. Inspired by familiar images, these items stimulate children’s imagination and help to develop balance in young children.
  • A place for meetings and exchanges, the Hiding little house is designed for young children. Children from 1 year of age come together in these little spaces to take a break or escape to imaginary worlds. A tunnel, play panels and an abacus complete the activities on the structure.
  • Both traditional and essential, the swing is a key component that allows children to experience the sensation of flying through the air. This swing (J474) has a cradle seat to ensure safety for very young children.
  • Finally, an ever-popular attraction in play areas, the slide offers a fun sliding experience and helps children overcome a fear of heights. It also teaches them to wait patiently for their turn and help friends in difficulty.

Zone No. 2: a place of discovery (from 2 years of age)

Designed on the principle of a trail, this zone is a miniature “factory” that includes several workshops for manual activities and modelling:

  • The Sand Factory encourages young children’s development in a fun context. At the start of the trail, children gather and decant sand, which they then flatten, mould, sculpt and transport. This sequence requires concentration and creativity.
  • Two excavators (J5014) are used in different workshops in the Sand Factory. They allow children to transport sand with coordination and agility.

Zone No. 3: an area for acrobats (from 6 years of age)

This zone is both the biggest and the most central. It consists of a large trail with play accessories for more adept and daring children: large net pyramids, climbing walls, a flexible gangway and a zip line. Nests are incorporated in the middle of the trail for breaks in the play area.

The Roll Runner, a group activity combining physical effort and challenge, completes the zone and allows children to experience new sensations of speed.

Zone No. 4: a WOW area! (from 7 years of age)

This zone features an impressive large Rainforest Tower which looks down over the play area. This majestic structure rises up to over 7 metres in height. Play houses, net structures and large Kayak slides guarantee lots of thrills!

To complete this play area, the Aeroskate and Roll-Up offer a challenge with a speed exercise in which synchronisation is the key to success!

Zone No. 5: sports and fitness area (from 10 years of age)

Designed for adults, this space includes fitness equipment and a Street Workout structure, an urban sport between strength training and gymnastics where users carry out various exercises using their own body weight on bars of different heights. This structure can be used for pull-ups, dips, press-ups, squats and more to build muscle strength.
